New Law Changes Saluting
A provision of the 2009 Defense Authorization Act changes federal law to allow U.S. veterans and military personnel not in uniform to render the military hand-salute when the national anthem is played. The new law took effect on October 14.
This change adds to a provision which was passed in the 2008 Defense Bill, which authorized veterans and military personnel in civilian clothes to render the military salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag.

We actually need a federal law for this? We should have had the right all along; why in the world would it have ever been against federal law for a veteran to acknowledge the anthem or the flag by saluting?
I agree, why do we need a law to allow this? Should have been ‘allowed’ all along. I like this new law, i find it a great honor to serve my country and to actually salute the flag as a service member. Bout damn time!
I Think It’s An Awesome Law! Do We Still Have To Be Covered Is My Question!
should President Elect Obama be allowed to salute the flag?
The U.S. is crazy enought to elect someone that won’t salute our flag, so we should have a law that MAKES obama show our flag some respect!!
Good one Bruce, you’re a bright one
