High School Graduate Numbers Decrease for Army Recruits

Monday January 28, 2008

The percent of Army recruits with a high school diploma dropped last year, continuing a trend that has worsened since the start of the Iraq war, according to an Associated Press article.

During the Fiscal Year 2007 recruiting cycle, only about 71 percent of new Army recruits were in the Tier I (high school diploma or at least 15 college credits). The Army's goal is that no more than 10 percent of recruits enlisted be in Tier II (GED or equivelent), which it hasn't met since 2004. Each year since, the number of recruits with at least a high school diploma has steadily declined.

The Army has gained a negative reputation with this process which is deterring high school and college graduates elsewhere. I’m an older high school graduate recently enlisted as a 25N (Nodal Network Systems Operator) and I’ve heard endless criticism for going the Army route.

Yet another reason to reconstitute the Draft…it served many generations during times of National need. If sufficient numbers of otherwise qualified people aren’t stepping up to the plate, draft em, issue em a servce number, and let em assume the responsibilities borne by generations-past…and don’t forget to thank them for shedding their diapers.
