One of the entitlements most new military personnel want to learn about is LEAVE. Leave is paid vacation from duty for recreation and relief from the pressures of job-related duties. You may also take leave for personal reasons and emergency situations. A "pass" (called "liberty" in the Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps) is time-off, not chargeable as leave.

Leave is a RIGHT (not a privilege) that is granted by Congress under Federal Law. While leave is a RIGHT, that doesn't necessarily mean you can take it whenever you wish. As with all things, "military necessity" determines when you can take your leave.

What is, if there even is one, the time frame in which a leave request must be approved/denied? If a request is submitted and no answer is given for say 32days, what steps should be taken by the soldier?

I know right I am a single mom of two and their Father doesn’t pay support and My Fiance is in Afghanistan and I just had to pay 450.00 for his pass, does that even make sense?

(6) Mindy says:

A “Liberty” fee I was e-mailed from the unitedstatesarmydesk@consultant.com has it listed at $200.00 for the fee, in my situation my fee is 300.00 because he is in Nigeria and a clearace fee of 100.00 dollars with the Nigerian Government and the UN. So in conclusion not only am I responsible for the Liberty Pass Card at $200.00 I also pay another $100.00 Clearance fee for the Nigerian government and UN Now u may ask yourself why I am even stating this, but I am a single mother of 2 and barely make-it the way it is. I have no shame is stating that this rule just sucks!

(21) Major K. says:

No they are not real!!!! At least for US soldiers. While in a combat zone, you get 2 weeks leave time and they will fly you to any where in the world for free. Your leave starts when you arrive at your destination’s front door. Im retired after 23.5 years. Don’t be gullable. Call the nearest provost mashall on any base and speak with them. Better yet, call the family support group leader. Some soldiers/sailors are using this to scam money from friends and loved ones and are very convincing of the need for the money. If on regular, non-combat zone leave, they are usually trying to pay for their airline tickets. Yes, families are being scammed by loved ones. I even had one soldier that scammed money from his wife. Imagine that. They got married just before deployment and he was just using her. Divorce soon followed upon returning back form a combat zone.

January 7, 2014 at 10:16 pm

US Military personnel do not have to purchase “liberty pass”, nor pay to apply to take leave. There may well be a “Major General Charles Houghton”, but I sincerely doubt that you are receiving e-mail from him.

(34) Help says:

I have been chatting with a sergeant from Afghanistan. we started chatting on Oasis.com we really hit it off so anxious to see him and get him out of the war zone I asked for an emergency leave due to personal problems and unavoidable circumstances. So I have gotten several forms to fill out and send back. so then I find out that it cost 1500 dollars a month for every month I want him to stay but when he arrives here safely you are supposed to get all your money back bc they also send you this money back form to fill out so they know where to send the money back to. I start crying because I don’t have 4500 dollars so I tell him and he suggest getting part of it from his sister. so she agrees to pay a thousand I can only come up with 1,500 and his commandant offered to pay the other 500. I am supposed to wake up in a few hours and go send a MoneyGram or Western Union the dominant of the USA Cynthia Peters in Georgia. I don’t know what to do I have really fallen for this guy and I want to be his hero. so does anybody know if requesting an emergency leave costs money?

January 10, 2014 at 1:30 pm
(35) usmilitary says:

Dear “Help”
You are being scammed. Civilians do not request leave for military personnel, the service member makes the request himself – and there is no payment required for requesting leave. Do not send any money.

(36) Lenore says:

My question is? Is there a refundable process fee. I was asked to pay $380Aud. I’m not sure what to believe so confusing and he seems so genuine. Please help

January 21, 2014 at 1:30 pm
(37) usmilitary says:

Lenore – members of the United States Military do not have to pay a fee to request leave, nor are their family or friends required to pay a fee for them. Period. The US military does not charge service members a monetary fee for going on leave – while on leave they receive all pay they are entitled to. If someone is trying to convince you otherwise, you are being scammed.

March 11, 2014 at 3:06 pm
(47) usmilitary says:

Ana – yes, it’s a scam – members of the US Military file for their own leave, and are not required to pay a fee to request leave. To the best of my knowledge, the *ONLY* US military troops in Nigeria are the Marine Guards and the military attaché at the US Embassy. A simple call to the Embassy should confirm the person you are chatting with is not attached to the embassy – http://nigeria.usembassy.gov/

Note – yes, there was an article that the US Navy was setting up a drone base in Niger – however, Niger [Republic of Niger] and Nigeria [Federal Republic of Nigeria] are two separate countries.

And found out on a website that I don’t have to payfor nothing.  So I need to know if I am being scamed for money from him and is he really in the military tnere. There was mention of a program earlier this year to providing training and a limited amount of equipment to the Nigeria Army Special Operations Command (NASOC), but I do not know at the moment if that was initiated or is still being worked out – but even then, it would not be combat troops patrolling around in Nigeria.
