According to a recently released FBI report, Gang-related activity in the US military is increasing and poses a threat to law enforcement officials and national security.
The report, Gang Activity in the U.S. Armed Forces Increasing, dated January 12, states that members of nearly every major street gang have been identified on both domestic and international military installations. These street gangs include the Bloods, Crips, Black Disciples, Gangster Disciples, Hells Angels, Latin Kings, The 18th Street Gang, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), Mexican Mafia, Nortenos, Surenos, Vice Lords, and various white supremacist groups. Wow I would think that the military could straighten them out. Hope I don’t get any in my squadron in May.
The Military recruits from society, therefore we will have any issues that society has (gangs, drugs, domestic violence, etc.) Our recruiting tactics should be tighter. With the GWOT the standards are dropping and that will equate to more issues.
Why is it surprising to know that the military has gang members? We have had them since long ago…It just didn’t start…In my time there were KKK, and pachucos…I served in the early 60s to the early 70s.
What do you expect? Where do you think the pool of recruits comes from??? Church’s?????

First of all recruiting is not much of a filter. (They are trying to make quota) Second, I don’t know about the other services, but BMT for the USAF is a joke. (Another poor filter). That leaves it up to the first line supervisors to find these punks and make sure they either straighten up, or that their AF career is short and not very sweet. There is absolutely no room for crap like that in the military. In closing, think about this. It could be one of those finger sign throwing punks that is holding an M-16 and protecting your base. If this trully is a problem in the military, it needs to be stopped now.
Would recruiting gang members be a good idea? Most are willing to use violence so the military doesn’t have to worry about them failing to fire. Most gang members are used to living a hard life where mistakes result in death. Most gang members have a sense of duty, loyalty, honor, and obligation. It is misdirected but the foundation is there. The military just has to redirect it. These are all good qualities in a soldier. The gang members just need a new direction and guidance, which the military can provide.
By recruiting gang members and straightening them out it helps the people, society and the community, and ultimately the military. The biggest issue is just making sure that the military straightens them out.
Hardly unavoidable given our current cultural climate… Just exactly what do you see on your TV crapin’ near every second of airtime!

Galen, sure it sounds like a good idea in theory. But obviously these people aren’t straighting out if they’re flashing gang signs and acting silly.
Unfortunately, the military doesn’t do as much screening as they do scaring. They don’t screen as well as they say they do, which results in some soldiers and sailors being less than standard. Personally, I agree with galen edwards. The military could be considered a gang of its own, but the loyalties would need to be redirected. I believe in the military’s ability to do this. These people may just be trying to better themselves and get ahead in life. That’s what I’m doing.

I agree with garbo. if the military wants to recruit then then they should just put them in SPEC OPS situations so they wont last long. But dont they do background checks before actual recruitmant?
Various white supremacists groups? I thought there were only two but they called the other groups by name. Way to down play the militia guys that join up to train for “race wars”. They’re not neeearly as dangerous as the mexicans and blacks, I guess.

Gang members enter the military to get combat training. More often than not, they will not go into battle because they will have been kick out for some reason. Their loyalty is to the gang, not the military. They will then use the training that they had received in basic or AIT excluding AF training, and I can say that because I spent half my military career in the AF) to benefit the gang. I am a veteran and now work with a Gang Task Force. It is more common than you think. The members also think that the cops will sympathize with them when they claim to be a veteran.
I know from experience that recruiters don’t care what the individuals background is, if there is a way for them to join the recruiter will make it happen.
The purpose of the military is to kill people and blow things up. The purpose of gangs is to kill people and take their money. The mindset is similiar, just directed towards a different goal.

Most all gang bangers never got past the 4th grade! That’s why they speak very poorly.
