Army Streamlines Service Uniform to One Blue Uniform
Thursday June 8, 2006
Army service uniforms will be streamlined to one blue Army Service Uniform. Currenly the Army has three variations of service uniforms -- green, blue and white. Many Soldiers already own an Army blue uniform (now to be called the Army Service Uniform) and may continue to wear it. Improvements will be made to the fabric and fit. Introduction in the Army Military Clothing Sales Stores should begin in fourth quarter of fiscal year 2007. Introduction in the Clothing Bag should begin first quarter 2009. The Mandatory Possession Date is expected to be fourth quarter fiscal year 2011.

Phasing out the BDU’s is a terrible idea, as the ACU’s are hideous and the velcro idea sucks. I do however commend them on only having the blue class A’s from now on. At least they did one thing right.
This should have been done years ago. Glad I already have a set of blues. All I have to do now is buy the gray shirt.
will they wear the black beret or garrison cover
It looks to me that they are trying to copy the Air Force. HA!
Air Force Blue
Marine Corps Blue
Navy Blue
Army Blue???
EKKKH! Wrong answer. Army Green! Hooah!
I am veteran of both USAF and USA.
I am proud of both branches and was
satisfied wearing blue in the USAF, and
green in the USA.
Looks like as others are saying the Army is going to be looking just like
the USAF. Why?
The Army wore blue long before the USAF ever existed. This change is a back to basics.
So very true, the “original” Air Force uniform WAS the Army uniform as it was not an independent service (and identity to go with it) until after the Second World War (Key West Agreement I recall). The “original” Army uniform never existed as uniformity was impractical (well nigh impossible even) for a Continental Army drawn from so many differing colonies (and the assoc militias too). But certainly the dark blue color came to be an underlying common “scheme” for lack of a better word. All through and past the civil war this remained true. Towards the First World War, the dark brown/olive drab/khaki supplanted the color blue (not just here but all over the world, though traditional colors were retained for dress uniforms) in a new uniform class: the “field dress” which eventually evolved into what we would call the Class A.
The Army Green didn’t exist until sometime around the Vietnam era. I abhored the Class A as some jokers version of a combat ice cream salesman’s uniform (without the beret or bloused boots, with them it looks sharp).
I see no problem and think it would actually be a good thing to go back to the WWI pattern military collar in the dress blues coloring. Generally speaking I think the uniforms turned to crap when they incorporated a “shirt and tie”. The inevitable slide towards a “business suit” affair.
I don’t have a problem with this change, but I think we should wear unit patches and combat patches to display unit pride. I asked to go to war with the 101st Airborne, and I am proud to wear that patch on both shoulders.
I don’t like this idea. There is a functionality that comes from having seperate uniforms that are in fact different. No matter how you dress down the blues they still look more formal and the more you dress them dow the worse they look. Just change the A’s don’t make two different uniforms with two different purposes into one uniform that doesn’t fit either purpose.
The Army blues were first implemented in 1776! And worn througout the 19th century…and as the dress uniform for much of the 20th. Hasn’t anybody paid attention to what the guys at Arlington/Tomb of the Unknowns have been wearing for the last 40 years? US Army Dress Blues.
I THINK THAT ARMY STARTED TO GO DOWN HILL SINCE THEY PUT ON THAT FRENCH HAT!(MADE IN CHINA). NOW THEY USE THAT AIRFORCES PATCH SYSTEM WHICH IS GREAT FOR PICKING UP LINT! NOW LET’S GET RID OF THE GREENS LETS GO BACK TO THE GOOD OLDS DAYS OF RIDING HORSES. ALEAST THE OLD BLUES WERE MADE TO LAST NOW ARE STUFF IS BEING MADE IN CHINA OR SOME OTHER NON-AMERICAN COUNTRY! IF THEY WANT TO GO BACK TO A GOOD LOOKING UNIFORM BRING BACK THE WWII ONE THEY WERE SHARP!. PUTTING PATCHS ON THE BLUES IS STUPID YOU SHOULD PROUD ENOUGH JUST TO WEAR A UNIFORM OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY!!!
Can you give me the AR that states the timeline for phasing out the Dress Greens and switching over to the Dress blues?
AR 670-1 is the regulation you are looking for. The wear out date should be published in the new AR 670-1 which should be out soon. The current AR 670-1 is dated 3 FEB 05.
There are many Soldiers out there with doctorate degrees in AR (ArD (lol)); do not listen to them. Read the reg yourself and seek advice and clarification from your chain of command.
For you on this board who say the Army will look like the Air Force, here is a pic for ya.

It’s a buch of Soldiers wearing the Army dress blue uniform next to an Airmen is servic blues. As you can see they don’t look anything a like.
well I personaly think that this move is wrong… we should look at the USMC for an example of a proper way to set up our uniforms.
we only need 3-4 different uniforms:
Utilites- for field/ war.
A Service uniform- the same color green with a new fabric, cut, and keep the new gray shirt.
A Dress Uniform- the same as now with better fabric, cut, and a permienant belt a better army version of USMC blues thats distinct to our US ARMY
a Evening/Mess Dress- for those “White Tie” functions…
I say let me draw up the new Regs and uniforms I’ll make our uniform as distinct and recocnizable if not more so than the USMC
HOOAH!!!
Well draw em brother! The Typical Soldier will not need a serice uniform. Issue em blues. My solution:
Dress Blue A’s: Bring back the last standing high collar dress blue uniform from retirement. The 1902 Army dress blues should be the issued uniform. The uniform that is shown below is an Artillery uniform (red piping). Make the piping universal Army gold.
Dress Blue B’s: The summer blue uniform should have a dark blue shirt along with the blue trousers.
Service Class A’s: Service uniforms should be the pinks and greens. Issue them to those who work in the Pentagon or who need them for daily wear.
Service Class B’s:Khakis should be the new summer uniform.

I agree with you above Dave. We need different uniforms for different occasions. It is impractical and ridiculous to have 2 uniforms fit-all situations. Having the “chokers” would be outstanding, it just looks classy. The Navy and Marine Corps have them and they’re sharp.
That would be for the DRESS Blues (not everyday or “Army Service Uniform”)
Then one for everyday use in garrison or in an office…. the “Pinks and Greens” of WWII are a classy uniform that would suit us perfectly.
Then of course the battle or field uniform which is an entirely separate issue with the ACU’s…
Finally, a “black tie” uniform which we have in the Mess Dress which doesn’t need to be altered.
4 Uniforms. Don’t tell me that it would cost a soldier all that much to maintain them; you’re not wearing each of them everyday. We would mostly wear the garrison uniform (khakis) unless training in the field or in the rare formal occasions.
Two uniforms for every occasion is insane. Bring back the chokers and khakis.
The women’s cover for the blues is ridiculous. They look like girl scouts. Whoever dreamed up: smaller leg stripes, no belt loops so you have wear your shirt out (makes you look sloppy, unprofessional, and pregnana), and girl scout hats. The only difference between the uniforms should be a slight difference in cut to accomodate the femal form. It can and should still look tailored, neat, and military. Quit embarrassing the women of the US Army. It embarrasses the whole military.
I’m a former Marine and I was recently considering enlisting in the Army (11B)…but after having a look at these new service uniforms, I’ve changed my mind. They are just too damned-ugly!
What a terrible idea.
Vietnam Class A Green 100% wool still good as new and I ain’t going to buy them fancypants blues.
Fine with me. I’ll wear the fancy pants blues and get the girls!
