I’m a 92Y20 getting ready to DEROES here in Korea on 30 NOV. I’m currently assigned to Ft. Bragg and I would like to know if anybody wants to swap it for Ft. Sill. My wife lives in Oklahoma City and is attending law school there. I haven’t seen her in a year and would REALLY like to be as close to her as I can possibly can. I’ve been trying to request Ft. This may be helpful especially for those coming from over seas if you are trying get to a certain base sometimes if you go to that base and get with a unit there they may be able to pull you from your current orders and get you there but do it while on leave. My husband had a chance to do this when he was on orders to go to Korea and stay at Ft.Hood alot of these unit are hurting your DA assigns you but these Commanders have a lot of pull also try that and see if it works.

This swap program is certainly nothing new. I remember hearing about it back in the days before muskets replaced clubs (well, not that long ago…it was during the 20th century!). Be that as it may…I’m seeing a lot of individual effort in this program, but, from where I sit, there doesn’t appear to be an official process through which this program can be administered. Someone, at the St. Louis level, needs to sort out all the cards, reshuffle the deck, and deal a new deck to the players. I realize that the Gov wants this to be a no-cost activity, however, if there is to be a “program” of official sanction, there needs to be some sort of proceedural guidance. Individual soldiers can’t just go about contacting the J-1s, G-1s, and S-1s throughout the vastness of the Green Machine.

On a more-personal note…in reading some of these “requests”, I see many reasons for a desire to transfer. Some may fall under, or close to, a hardship situation. These cases, I am certain, should start within the Soldier’s chain of command. But let’s face it, people…some of these requests strike me as nothing short of “waa waa”, woe-is-me complaining over what may be, and probably is, an undesirable situation. Come on, people, Soldier-up and ask yourself if that’s what this is all about. Heat, cold, boredom, etc, etc have always been a part of that for which you all signed up. I know my fellow contemporaries (code for old farts!) can recount many assignments which, at the time, elicited the thought “why me…let someone else do this”. Yours truly can certainly attest to that…over a 21-year career, I had some pretty interesting assignments which, even at my current senior citizen status, I would repeat in a heartbeat (hey, I’m a poet and didn’t know it!)…but you better believe there were many long and dreary jobs which…well, you get the picture.

I realize that a soldier’s morale is critical in the overall performance of that Green Machine to which earlier reference was made. But let’s be realistic, people. I realize the military, today, is comprised of a generation steeped in such misguided (my personal view) ventures as “No Child Left Behind”, in which extaordinary focus was/is directed toward individual “desire”, much to the exclusion of the big picture. Perhaps this, in some small way, explains some of the social ills of the day…low hs graduation rates, failures, in previously unheard-of numbers, at the MEPS, etc…in short, a failure to “get with the program”!

Phoua Yang (106): One does not/better not go to my Beloved Ft. Bragg simply to attain Airborne Wings. I would love to stay here but I currently have a situation that for me to be able to deal with, I must be in Germany.
